October 1:  The Dalles

Yesterday we left Richland and began sailing just a little before dinner time.  So I went up to the top and took some photos of the setting sun and scenery.  It's the reason we've returned to this cruise....

Also, for those who have mentioned that this looked like a cruise they may be interested in, here's a shot of our stateroom.  They truly are small, but you really...REALLY are never in your room.  And on our level for example, just ten steps away is a huge living room with all kinds of comfortable furniture, 24 hour snacks/coffee/soft drinks and panoramic windows.

Last night at dinner, for the second consecutive evening, the entertainer for the evening sat at our dinner table.  We discovered that Perri was going to be giving a lecture on pictograms and petroglifs.  She said that while we would be passing by an area know for this (where she gives tours) we would not have a chance to stop and see them.  BUT, she told us the captain had said you could see one of the bigger ones if you were up early.  Kim and I had just gotten up when that announcement was made and because you would need binoculars to see it, we didn't rush up.  But after getting coffee we went up to enjoy the crisp morning air (49 degrees!).  We were surprised to see a gathering of about a half dozen people at the front of the ship, including Perri, and that the ship was right up to the shore line.  Turns out there was another petroglif that Perri had never seen before!  Here's the photos of it, including close-ups:

What's also interesting is that these were drawn prior to the building of the Dalles Dam in the 1950s and that dam raised the water level over 40 feet, so who ever did this scaled the cliffs to etch this into the side of the cliff!  After breakfast we were approaching another lock and so I took some pics of the before and after as we were dropped nearly 75 feet.

Just a side note.....The Dalles was the official end of the Oregon Trail.  Here settlers would either settle or catch a ship to move farther west by river along the Columbia River as we will be doing.  Also, this marks the entry into the Columbia River gorge.  And if you think you've seen beautiful scenery, just hold on Nellie, it's about to get REAL!

Cascade Cliffs Winery Excursion

We were off on our excursion a little after 2 pm when we took our bus back to the Dalles Bridge we'd crossed under this morning and drove over to the Washington side of the river.  There we drove along the scenic mountains and river setting while our bus driver Lynn told us about the area, and in about twenty-five minutes we reached the picturesque winery.

We were met in the vineyard by the owner's sister, Joanie, who offered us all a sampling of one of their white wines.  They are known for their red wines however and after an introduction to their history (they are the oldest vinery operating in the area) we moved to a shaded area where we had several red wines, and then later whites under a canopy of grapes.

After about forty minutes of sampling we got to see the grapes being crushed and separated from their skins, then to walk around the grounds where I took a few photos of their magnificent piece of property.  As a thank you for taking the excursion American Cruise Lines paid for all of us to keep our signature wine glass.

September 30:  Pendleton Underground City Tour

This morning we docked in Richland, Washington and we were scheduled to make the bus trip to Pendleton for the Underground City Tour, as well as two accompanying adventures.  But as it turned out, only I went on the excursion while the others stayed on board for the day.  (So no comments about me dominating the pics today!)  One of the best parts of the day came when I approached the bus and saw our driver for the week was Jodi, who had driven us around a year and a half ago, and she was great!  Here are pics from today's adventures.....

September 29 - Transfer to Ship & Sailing

Today was our final day in Spokane and the day we were to head out from the hotel to our ship, the Queen of the West. Breakfast was provided by American Cruise Lines and our welcome packets had told us to meet in the lobby at 9:45 am with our luggage and boarding passes. There were nearly 70 guests who were staying at the Hilton Garden Inn - Spokane Airport who were to board the provided charter busses and we were all eagerly awaiting the arrival of our cruise line director. He appeared around 8:30 to answer questions and checked us in as we left the lobby to board one of two busses. We drove south through the Palouse area of Washington and this brought back a lot of memories to Kim and I as we'd driven this route many times to visit our oldest son Jeff when he first began his college football career at Washington State University.....a throw-back photo of me on the sidelines in the late November "game of the year," the Apple Cup vs. arch rival Washington.

The trip took about 1 hour and 45 minutes before we arrived in Clarkson where we soon boarded the Queen of the West to begin our cruising adventure!

September 27 - 28

Thursday/Friday:  September 27 - 28

We're back!  Fifteen months ago Kim and I joined our great friends Sue & Dan Reynolds to adventure through the Pacific Northwest on American Cruise Lines "Columbia River Cruise" adventure.  That time we flew into Portland and stayed for two nights and then sailed east on the Columbia River, then the Snake River before concluding the trip in Spokane, Washington.  We loved the cruise adventure so much that we convinced Kim's twin sister Karrie, and her husband Randy, and the twins' parents Ed & Peggy Woods to join us for a "reboot" of the adventure.  So on Thursday September 27th we all flew to Spokane to begin the adventure, in reverse order from our previous trip.

Ironically, September 27 is the twins' birthday and so how special was it that they awoke today knowing that they would be meeting each other out west to begin a great adventure!  Kim and I were the first to arrive and I happened to mention to the girl at the desk that we had hoped to go next door to the Rusty Moose restaurant to get ice cream to celebrate Kim's birthday.  Her eyes lit up and she said, "Wait a minute" and she grabbed what looked like a birthday card.  She filled it out and told me that if we went over to their restaurant here in the lobby, in the next twenty minutes before they closed for the night, Kim would be entitled to a free birthday ice cream sundae!  And so we did!  

As we sat outside it was a bit "coolish" - but of course us Florida "kids" were loving it because we've had 90 degree temperatures with "feel like" temps in the triple digits for more than a month, making this evening's sixty-two degrees (those of you who truly know me, know how very ironic this is!) feel just awesome.

At about 9:35 Karrie and the rest of the family arrived and Kim called them to ask if she could take their order so we could get them some late dinner before the restaurant closed.  The Hilton Garden Inn located right near the Spokane Airport had been so great the last time we were here, and again proved how awesome they were as the girl working the restaurant offered to get the order in before closing and keep it warm until everyone arrived.  They all got here around 10 pm and we enjoyed a late night light dinner as we kicked off the adventure while celebrating the birthday girls.

Surprisingly we were able to sleep until nearly 7 am local time so it appears like we won't have a too difficult time adjusting to west coast time.  By about 8:15 we were in the lobby having coffee with Randy and Karrie and we set up an 11:30 am meet time for the entire group to grab an early lunch at the Rusty Moose next door.  When we were here before we loved this place and had gone back twice.  I in particular had really enjoyed the spaghetti with bison meat balls, so that was on my mind.  We had a great lunch and headed back to the hotel for a short period of time before calling an Uber for our winery visit to Arbor Crest Vineyards.

At 2 pm we reconvened in the lobby and called for our ride.  It was about twenty-five minutes to get to and climb the winding road up the cliff to the Arbor Crest Winery.  My contact here, Ashley, met us shortly and arranged for our guide to set us up for the afternoon.  First we were all offered a glass of wine and then we toured the gorgeous facility which had once been a private estate.  The turning leaves just added to what Kim and I had fondly remembered as one of the BEST winery visits we'd ever had......

 

After the tour of the estate we settled in and sampled a wide variety of wines and had plenty of time to roam around and take some photos of not only the grounds but of the family.

About 4:30 we called for our Uber ride which eventually arrived - it's a long and arduous story, which has become our "Uber Saga" - nothing is ever easy, let's leave it at that.  And before 5:30 we'd arrived at Clinkerdaggers Restaurant which overlooks the Spokane River for what was a great dinner to top off the initial day of the adventure.

Tomorrow breakfast at the hotel is courtesy of American Cruise Lines and then our bus picks us up around 10:30 to transport us the nearly two hours to Clarkson where we will be boarding the Queen of the West to begin the river cruise!
